BENUE TENSION RISES AS GUNMEN KILL MIYETTI ALLAH CHAIRMAN, ANOTHER VICTIM


Fresh tension has erupted in parts of Benue State after unidentified gunmen reportedly killed the Chairman of the Miyetti Allah Cattle Breeders Association of Nigeria (MACBAN) in the state, Ardo Muhammad, along with another individual identified as Yakubu Isah.

The deadly attack reportedly occurred on Friday in Otukpo Local Government Area, raising security concerns in surrounding communities, including neighboring Ohinmini Local Government Area.

According to reports, Ardo Muhammad had earlier attended a peace meeting involving Fulani herders and leaders of Ayunne community in Ohinmini Local Government Area. The meeting was reportedly convened by the Divisional Police Officer (DPO) in an effort to address recent tensions and security concerns in the area.

However, shortly after the meeting ended, the MACBAN chairman and his companion were said to have been travelling back when gunmen ambushed their vehicle at Okudu community in Otukpo Local Government Area.

Both victims were reportedly killed during the attack.

The deceased’s eldest son confirmed the development during a telephone conversation with journalists on Friday night, stating that his father was attacked and killed by unknown gunmen while returning from the peace meeting.

Confirming the incident, Chairman of Otukpo Local Government Area, Maxwell Ogiri, said the killing had triggered widespread tension within affected communities and neighboring areas.

He urged residents to remain calm, assuring that security agencies were already responding to the situation.

According to Ogiri, authorities are monitoring developments closely to prevent further escalation.

Also reacting to the incident, Chairman of Ohinmini Local Government Area, Adole Gabriel, explained that the slain MACBAN leader had participated in a peace dialogue initiated by the local police division following previous violent incidents in Ayunne community.

Gabriel stated that discussions at the meeting were reportedly productive before the victims departed, only for their vehicle to be attacked shortly afterward.

The Benue State Police Command also confirmed the incident.

Police spokesperson, DSP Udeme Edet, said the command had received reports of the attack and that an investigation had commenced to identify those responsible and determine the circumstances surrounding the killings.

Several communities in Otukpo and neighboring Ohinmini have in recent months witnessed recurring attacks and violent clashes, contributing to ongoing security challenges in parts of Benue State.

Security observers say the latest incident could further heighten tensions in the affected communities as authorities work to restore calm and strengthen security presence across the region.
