BOMB EXPLOSION ROCKS LAGOS MARKET AS POLICE CONFIRM IED INCIDENT IN MUSHIN
A bomb explosion on Monday caused panic at the popular Shoe Materials Market in Mushin, Lagos, after an improvised explosive device (IED) detonated beneath a vehicle, prompting an immediate security response from the Lagos State Police Command.
The Lagos State Commissioner of Police, Fatai Tijani, confirmed the incident while addressing journalists at the scene, assuring residents and traders that the area remains safe following a comprehensive security operation carried out by bomb disposal experts.
According to the police commissioner, security authorities received distress reports about an explosion in the busy commercial area and quickly deployed the Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD) unit to secure the location and prevent further danger.
He explained that preliminary investigations showed the blast was triggered by an Improvised Explosive Device planted underneath a parked vehicle before detonating when the engine was started.
“The device was discovered to have been positioned beneath the passenger side of the vehicle and exploded immediately the vehicle was ignited,” Tijani said during the briefing.
The incident reportedly left one individual injured. Emergency responders immediately evacuated the victim to a nearby medical facility, where the person is currently receiving treatment. Police authorities confirmed that the injured victim remains in stable condition.
Following the explosion, security operatives conducted a detailed sweep of the surrounding area to determine whether additional explosive devices had been planted.
According to the police commissioner, the operation confirmed there were no other explosives within the market environment, easing fears among traders and residents who had initially fled the area after the blast.
Investigators have since recovered fragments and remnants of the suspected explosive device, which have been taken for forensic examination as authorities intensify efforts to determine the source of the device and identify those responsible.
Police authorities urged residents, business owners, and traders around Mushin and nearby communities to remain calm and continue their normal activities while investigations continue.
The latest security incident has renewed concerns over public safety in crowded commercial centres, with authorities promising to provide further updates as investigations progress.
