COURT ORDERS SOWORE TO OPEN DEFENCE IN ALLEGED DEFAMATION CASE INVOLVING PRESIDENT TINUBU


A Federal High Court sitting in Abuja has directed the publisher of Sahara Reporters and former presidential candidate of the African Action Congress (AAC), Omoyele Sowore, to open his defence in the criminal defamation case filed against him over alleged defamatory remarks concerning President Bola Ahmed Tinubu.

The ruling followed the court's determination that the prosecution had established a prima facie case requiring the defendant to respond to the allegations before the court.

Sowore is facing charges linked to statements allegedly made about President Tinubu. The case, which has attracted significant public attention, centers on claims that certain remarks made by the activist and media publisher were defamatory.

With the latest court order, Sowore is expected to present his defence and call witnesses, if necessary, to challenge the allegations brought against him.

The matter forms part of a broader legal dispute that has generated discussions on freedom of expression, media responsibility, and the application of defamation laws in Nigeria.

The case has been adjourned to a later date for the continuation of proceedings.
