IGP DISU DEPLOYS DIGS ACROSS GEOPOLITICAL ZONES, LAUNCHES INTER-STATE “HANDSHAKE PATROLS” TO BOOST SECURITY


The Inspector-General of Police (IGP), Olatunji Rilwan Disu, has approved the deployment of Deputy Inspectors-General of Police (DIGs) to Nigeria’s six geopolitical zones as part of a renewed strategy to strengthen security operations, improve supervision, and enhance coordination across the country.

The deployment, which takes effect from June 15, 2026, was announced during the monthly conference of strategic senior officers of the Nigeria Police Force held at the Force Headquarters in Abuja.

According to the police leadership, the initiative is designed to bring strategic command closer to operational areas, improve accountability, and ensure faster responses to emerging security challenges nationwide. The deployed DIGs are expected to work closely with Assistant Inspectors-General of Police (AIGs) and Commissioners of Police (CPs) within their respective zones to enhance oversight and ensure effective implementation of policing directives.

As part of broader efforts to strengthen national security, the IGP also directed all Commissioners of Police across the country to immediately establish coordinated inter-state security operations known as “Handshake Patrols.”

The initiative aims to improve intelligence sharing, strengthen communication between neighbouring police commands, and facilitate joint operations against criminal activities that transcend state boundaries.

Speaking on the rationale behind the directive, the IGP noted that criminal elements frequently take advantage of jurisdictional boundaries by carrying out unlawful activities in one state and fleeing to another to evade arrest. He emphasized the need for a more coordinated regional approach to policing and security management.

Commissioners of Police have therefore been instructed to maintain regular operational engagements with neighbouring commands, organize coordinated patrols along major highways and border routes, and intensify intelligence-driven collaboration to tackle cross-border crimes effectively.

The police leadership expressed confidence that the combined measures would enhance operational efficiency, improve crime prevention efforts, and strengthen public confidence in law enforcement.

The Nigeria Police Force reiterated its commitment to intelligence-led policing, strategic coordination, and collaboration with relevant security agencies to safeguard lives and property while promoting public safety across the nation.
