SENATE SET TO CONSIDER STATE POLICE BILL


The Senate is expected to consider a constitutional amendment bill seeking the establishment of state police across Nigeria, a move that could mark a major shift in the country's security architecture.

Senate Leader, Senator Opeyemi Bamidele, disclosed that lawmakers are prioritising the proposal due to growing security concerns nationwide and the widespread support it has received from key stakeholders.

According to Bamidele, the National Assembly has decided to treat the state police provision separately from the broader constitutional amendment process to accelerate its passage.

He stated that there is strong consensus among federal and state authorities on the need for state police, adding that President Bola Tinubu and state governors have expressed support for the initiative.

The Senate Leader noted that extensive consultations have already been held with relevant stakeholders, including the Office of the Attorney-General of the Federation, the Chief of Staff to the President, Femi Gbajabiamila, the Inspector-General of Police, Tunji Disu, and other security officials.

If passed by the National Assembly, the proposed amendment will be transmitted to the 36 State Houses of Assembly for ratification. Under the Constitution, approval by at least two-thirds of the state legislatures is required before the President can assent to the bill.

The proposal for state police has remained one of Nigeria's most debated constitutional reforms, driven largely by increasing cases of banditry, kidnapping, insurgency, and other security challenges across the country.

Supporters argue that state-controlled police forces would improve local security by leveraging officers' knowledge of community dynamics, language, and terrain. Critics, however, have expressed concerns that governors could misuse such forces for political purposes.

President Tinubu has consistently backed the creation of state police as part of broader efforts to strengthen national security and improve law enforcement efficiency.

Should the bill secure the required legislative approvals, it would represent one of the most significant constitutional and security reforms in Nigeria's democratic history.
