CAPE VERDE GOALKEEPER VOZINHA EMOTIONAL AFTER HISTORIC WORLD CUP DEBUT AGAINST SPAIN

Cape Verde goalkeeper Vozinha has revealed the deeply personal reason behind the emotional moment that followed his country’s historic FIFA World Cup debut after helping his side secure an impressive draw against Spain.

The veteran shot-stopper became one of the standout performers of the tournament after delivering an exceptional display that helped Cape Verde hold European powerhouse Spain to a 0-0 draw during their opening match in Georgia.

The result marked a historic milestone for Cape Verde, which was making its first-ever appearance at the FIFA World Cup, while Vozinha’s performance earned him the Man of the Match award after making seven crucial saves to deny Spain throughout the encounter.

Beyond the match result, the 40-year-old goalkeeper also entered the record books by becoming the oldest goalkeeper to keep a clean sheet on his FIFA World Cup debut, adding another historic achievement to an already memorable night.

However, despite the celebration surrounding the result and his individual performance, the Cape Verde international was visibly emotional immediately after the final whistle.

Speaking to reporters after the match, Vozinha explained that thoughts of family members who could not witness the biggest moment of his football career overwhelmed him.

According to the experienced goalkeeper, he was raised by his grandparents during childhood, and memories of them became the reason behind his tears after the game.

He revealed that both grandparents had passed away several years ago and were unable to witness his achievement on football’s biggest stage.

“I cried after the game because I was raised by my grandparents during my childhood, and they could not be there,” Vozinha said.

“They passed away a few years ago. My mother was also unable to attend due to visa issues and the financial cost involved. We could not arrange this in time.”

The emotional revelation added another layer to what had already become one of the most memorable moments of the early stages of the tournament.

Vozinha’s outstanding performance ensured Cape Verde secured a valuable point against one of Europe’s strongest national teams and delivered one of the biggest surprises of the competition so far.

The goalkeeper also achieved another major milestone by becoming the oldest player ever to feature in a country’s debut World Cup match, surpassing the previous record held by CuraƧao goalkeeper Eloy Room.

Reacting to his Man of the Match recognition, Vozinha admitted he never imagined receiving such an honour during his first appearance at the World Cup.

“I never imagined anything like this,” he said while reacting to being named Man of the Match.

“I am incredibly proud to be named Man of the Match.”

The veteran goalkeeper also expressed pride in representing Cape Verde at the tournament, describing the country’s journey to qualification as challenging but rewarding.

According to him, representing the island nation on football’s biggest stage remains one of the greatest moments of his career.

“It is an honour to represent the country I cherish. We come from a very small place, and our journey to qualification was quite challenging. Today, our dream was realised by competing against a team like Spain. I take great pride in everyone who contributed to that process,” he added.

For Cape Verde, the draw against Spain represents a landmark achievement in the nation’s football history, while Vozinha’s heroic performance and emotional story have quickly become one of the standout narratives of the tournament.

The result has further strengthened Cape Verde’s hopes of making a strong impression in their maiden FIFA World Cup appearance as they continue their historic campaign.
