CLERIC FOUND DEAD IN ONDO HOTEL HOURS BEFORE INSTALLATION AS CHURCH LEADER

The Ondo State Police Command has commenced an investigation into the death of a 71-year-old cleric, Omotayo Ezekiel Fajana, whose body was discovered under suspicious circumstances inside a hotel in Akungba-Akoko, Akoko South-West Local Government Area of Ondo State.

According to police authorities, the deceased had travelled to the community to attend a church event where he was scheduled to be installed as the Head Baba Aladura of a faction of the Cherubim and Seraphim Church.

The spokesperson for the Ondo State Police Command, Abayomi Jimoh, confirmed the development in a statement made available to journalists on Monday.

Jimoh explained that the case was first reported at the Akungba Police Division by Olaseni Sunday Olaoluwa, identified as a relative of the deceased, who informed officers that Fajana had travelled to Akungba-Akoko for a church programme at Ogo Orimolade Cherubim and Seraphim Church, Okerigbo, where the installation ceremony was scheduled to take place.

Preliminary police investigations revealed that the cleric was later found dead inside a hotel in the area under circumstances considered suspicious by investigators.

Police authorities also disclosed that detectives are investigating allegations that some church officials and hotel staff allegedly moved the deceased’s body to a mortuary located in Ikare-Akoko without first obtaining an official medical certificate confirming the cause of death from a qualified medical practitioner.

Investigators are further examining claims that money may have exchanged hands in the process that led to the transfer of the corpse before church-related activities reportedly continued.

As part of the ongoing investigation, three suspects have been arrested and are currently assisting police authorities as detectives work to establish the exact cause of death and determine whether foul play was involved.

The Commissioner of Police in Ondo State, CP Felix Ohagwu, has reportedly directed a thorough and discreet investigation into the incident.

The development has generated concern within the community as authorities continue efforts to uncover the circumstances surrounding the cleric’s sudden death.

Police have assured the public that findings from the investigation will determine the next line of action as the case unfolds.
