FEAR IN ZAMFARA AS BANDITS ABDUCT 50 COMMUNITY ELDERS DURING PEACE PARLEY


Authorities and residents in Zamfara State have been thrown into confusion after armed bandits reportedly abducted about 50 community elders during a reconciliation meeting in Maradun Local Government Area.

The incident occurred in Magamin Diddi village, located in the Magami/Faru Ward, where community members had organized a delegation of elders to engage armed groups in dialogue aimed at restoring peace and allowing farming activities to resume in the area.

According to local sources, the delegation met the bandits in a nearby forest on Sunday as part of efforts to negotiate peace. However, the situation took a different turn when the armed group reportedly held the elders captive during the meeting.

A resident of the community, Musa Sani, said the initiative was driven by the need to ensure safety and return to farmlands ahead of the farming season. He explained that the community had believed dialogue would help ease ongoing tensions.

However, the outcome was not as expected, as the group sent for discussions was allegedly detained by the armed men.

The Chairman of Maradun Local Government Area, Bello Dosara, confirmed the incident, noting that the local government was not informed about the peace initiative before it took place.

He reiterated that both the state and local authorities have consistently opposed informal reconciliation efforts with armed groups, warning that such engagements pose serious risks to residents.

Dosara also expressed concern over recent insecurity in the area, including reported road blockades and violent attacks linked to armed groups.

He further confirmed that 11 of the abducted elders have since been released, while 39 others remain in captivity as efforts continue to assess the situation.

Security concerns remain high in parts of Zamfara State, where communities continue to face repeated attacks and abductions despite ongoing military operations.
