IRAN EXECUTES 18 PROTESTERS AS UN RAISES ALARM OVER HUMAN RIGHTS CRACKDOWN


The United Nations has raised serious concerns over what it described as an intensified crackdown on civil liberties in Iran, revealing that at least 40 individuals have been executed by Iranian authorities on national security-related charges since the beginning of 2026.

According to a statement released on Monday by the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights, Volker Turk, the executions included at least 18 individuals linked to anti-government protests, sparking renewed international concern over Iran’s human rights record.

The UN official said Iranian authorities have significantly escalated efforts to suppress dissent across the country, with thousands of people reportedly arrested amid growing restrictions on civic freedoms and public expression.

Turk stated that the government has tightened its grip on citizens by enforcing stricter controls on political activities and public gatherings while carrying out executions tied to national security allegations.

The latest figures come as international observers continue to monitor the human rights situation in Iran following recurring protests and tensions that have gripped the country in recent years.

Global rights organizations have repeatedly expressed concerns about the use of capital punishment in Iran, particularly in cases involving protesters, political activists, and individuals accused of threatening national security.

The UN’s latest statement is expected to increase diplomatic pressure on Tehran as calls continue from international communities for greater respect for human rights, judicial transparency, and protection of civil liberties within the country.

Iran has previously defended its judicial actions, maintaining that its legal system operates within the framework of national law and security priorities. However, rights advocates continue to urge authorities to halt executions linked to political dissent and ensure fair legal proceedings for all detainees.

The situation remains under close international watch as concerns grow over the broader implications for freedom of expression and political stability in the Middle East.
