BORNO DECLARES PUBLIC HOLIDAY TO MARK ISLAMIC NEW YEAR 1448 AH


The Borno State Government has declared Tuesday, June 16, 2026, as a public holiday to commemorate the beginning of the Islamic New Year, marking the first day of Muharram 1448 After Hijrah (AH).

The announcement was made in a statement issued on Sunday by the State Commissioner for Information and Internal Security, Usman Tar, on behalf of the state government.

According to the statement, Governor Babagana Umara Zulum approved the holiday in recognition of the significance of Muharram, which marks the beginning of a new year in the Islamic calendar observed by Muslims across the world.

The Islamic calendar, also known as the Hijri calendar, is based on lunar cycles and is approximately 11 to 12 days shorter than the Gregorian calendar. As a result, the year 1448 AH overlaps parts of both 2026 and 2027 on the Gregorian calendar.

The state government urged residents to use the occasion as a period for reflection and renewed commitment to peaceful coexistence, service to humanity, and the continued development of Borno State.

The statement noted that all citizens are encouraged to reflect on the importance of the Islamic New Year and dedicate themselves to values that promote peace and unity within society.

The commissioner also called on residents to embrace virtues such as unity, solidarity, tolerance, justice, mercy, and multicultural understanding, describing them as essential principles for strengthening social harmony and fostering peaceful coexistence among diverse communities.

Tar reaffirmed the commitment of the Borno State Government and its people to Nigeria’s unity, prosperity, and continued positive image within the international community.

Governor Zulum further urged citizens across different communities and faith groups to pray for peace, democratic stability, and sustained harmony across the country.

The declaration places Borno among states observing the Islamic New Year as an important religious and cultural event for reflection and communal unity.
