EDO GOVERNMENT CLOSES SCHOOLS OVER ALLEGED KIDNAP THREAT TO STUDENTS


The Edo State Government has ordered the immediate closure of three secondary schools in Akoko-Edo Local Government Area following intelligence reports indicating a potential kidnapping threat targeting students.

The directive was contained in a circular issued by the Edo State Ministry of Education and signed by the Permanent Secretary, Mr. Enodolomwanyi Otamere. The affected schools are Ososo Grammar School, Ososo Comprehensive High School, and Makeke Secondary School.

The circular, dated June 9, 2026, was obtained by the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Wednesday.

According to reports, the decision followed a security alert reportedly issued by the Department of State Services (DSS), warning of a possible plot by suspected criminal elements to abduct schoolchildren in Edo North Senatorial District.

The intelligence report, contained in a memo dated June 5 and reportedly addressed to the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC), alleged that security operatives intercepted communications between two suspected bandits discussing plans to target students in the area.

The memo indicated that the suspects allegedly considered schoolchildren as potential targets after previous attempts to kidnap wealthy individuals did not generate the financial returns they had anticipated.

In response to the intelligence, the Edo State Government directed the immediate suspension of academic activities in the affected schools as a precautionary measure aimed at safeguarding students, teachers, and other school personnel.

The closure underscores growing concerns over security challenges affecting educational institutions in parts of the country. Authorities have emphasized that the decision was taken in the interest of public safety while security agencies continue efforts to assess and neutralize any potential threats.

As of the time of filing this report, state authorities had not announced a specific date for the reopening of the affected schools. Security agencies are expected to intensify surveillance and other preventive measures in the affected communities.

The Edo State Government has reiterated its commitment to the protection of students and educational facilities and urged residents to remain vigilant and cooperate with security agencies by reporting suspicious activities.
