FG DECLARES JUNE 12 PUBLIC HOLIDAY TO MARK 2026 DEMOCRACY DAY


The Federal Government has declared Friday, June 12, 2026, a public holiday in commemoration of this year's Democracy Day celebration.

The announcement was made in a statement issued by the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Interior, Dr. Magdalene Ajani, on behalf of the Minister of Interior, Dr. Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo.

According to the statement, the minister congratulated Nigerians on the nation's uninterrupted democratic journey and commended citizens for their continued commitment to democratic principles.

Tunji-Ojo described June 12 as a significant date in Nigeria's history, symbolizing the country's dedication to truth, justice, peace, and national unity. He noted that Democracy Day serves as a reminder of the sacrifices made by individuals and groups who contributed to the nation's democratic development.

The minister also reaffirmed the commitment of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu's administration to strengthening democratic institutions and ensuring governance that reflects the will and aspirations of the Nigerian people.

He urged Nigerians to use the occasion to reflect on the country's democratic progress, promote national cohesion, and support efforts aimed at fostering sustainable development across the country.

Democracy Day is observed annually on June 12 in honor of the historic 1993 presidential election, widely regarded as one of the freest and fairest elections in Nigeria's history. The day has become a national symbol of democratic struggle, civic participation, and the pursuit of good governance.

As part of the celebration, government institutions, public offices, and many private organizations across the country are expected to observe the public holiday.
