FG RELEASES N21.2 MILLION TO STATES FOR EBOLA PREPAREDNESS


The Federal Government has approved the release of N21.2 million to each state across Nigeria as part of efforts to strengthen preparedness against the Ebola Virus Disease (EVD) and other emerging public health threats.

The approval was granted by the Coordinating Minister of Health and Social Welfare, Professor Muhammad Ali Pate, with the funds representing 50 percent of the State Outbreak Investigation and Response Fund allocation.

According to information from the Federal Ministry of Health and Social Welfare, the funds will be disbursed through the Nigeria Centre for Disease Control and Prevention (NCDC) under the Basic Health Care Provision Fund framework.

The intervention is aimed at improving Nigeria’s disease surveillance systems, boosting emergency preparedness, and strengthening rapid response mechanisms amid growing concerns over possible public health threats.

The ministry explained that the latest funding initiative is part of broader national efforts to improve the country’s health security system, complementing the work of the Presidential Task Force on Ebola Preparedness and Other Health Threats, chaired by the Chief of Staff to the President, Femi Gbajabiamila.

Although no confirmed Ebola case has been reported in Nigeria at the moment, the Federal Government emphasized that proactive action remains necessary to ensure the country is fully prepared to prevent, detect, and respond effectively to any possible outbreak.

State governments are expected to utilize the funds to strengthen surveillance structures, improve outbreak response systems, and enhance public health emergency management capacity.

Professor Pate also directed all beneficiary states to account for both newly released and previously disbursed outbreak response funds within six months, while ensuring strict compliance with financial accountability and reporting guidelines.

The minister noted that the approval demonstrates the Federal Government’s commitment to protecting public health while promoting transparency and prudent management of public resources.

He further reaffirmed the administration’s commitment to strengthening Nigeria’s national health security through continuous investment in disease prevention, detection, and emergency response systems nationwide.
