FUTO VC REVERSES APPOINTMENT OF 24 AIDES AFTER EDUCATION MINISTRY INTERVENTION


The Vice-Chancellor of the Federal University of Technology, Owerri (FUTO), Professor Ikechukwu Dozie, has officially reversed the appointment of 24 personal aides following intervention from the Federal Ministry of Education over concerns surrounding the appointments.

The decision comes shortly after the university leadership received a directive from the Federal Ministry of Education ordering the immediate withdrawal of the appointments, which authorities described as inconsistent with regulations guiding federal universities in Nigeria.

According to an internal circular issued by the university’s Registrar, Chiedozie Uba, and dated June 24, 2026, the appointments earlier announced through a previous memo have now been withdrawn with immediate effect.

The circular informed members of the university community that all appointments referenced in an earlier memorandum dated June 22, 2026, had been cancelled.

The development followed reports that the Minister of Education, Dr. Tunji Alausa, summoned the FUTO Vice-Chancellor to Abuja over what the ministry described as irregular appointments involving 24 aides attached to the office of the Vice-Chancellor.

A letter issued on behalf of the Minister by the Acting Director of University Education, Dr. Kareem Olalekan, reportedly questioned the legality of the appointments and raised concerns about compliance with due process.

According to the ministry, the appointments appeared to conflict with established regulations, approved procedures, and administrative standards governing Nigeria’s federal university system.

The ministry directed the university management to immediately reverse the appointments and submit documentary evidence confirming compliance with the directive.

Part of the ministry’s communication stated that after reviewing the circumstances surrounding the appointments, officials concluded that the action did not align with the extant regulations and established procedures required within the federal university structure.

Following the reversal, Professor Dozie is expected to appear before officials of the Federal Ministry of Education in Abuja on Monday, June 29, 2026, for further discussions regarding the matter.

The incident has sparked conversations within Nigeria’s education sector about administrative accountability, governance procedures, and compliance with established appointment guidelines across tertiary institutions.

Observers say the outcome of the meeting between the university leadership and ministry officials could provide further clarity on the standards expected in appointments and administrative processes within federal universities.
