IGP DISU BANS POLICE OFFICERS FROM UNAUTHORISED SOCIAL MEDIA CONTENT CREATION


The Inspector-General of Police, Olatunji Disu, has directed all officers and personnel of the Nigeria Police Force to immediately stop engaging in unauthorised social media activities, including content creation, live streaming, and other online broadcasts capable of affecting the integrity and professional image of the Force.

The directive comes amid growing concerns over the increasing number of serving police officers appearing in online videos, live broadcasts, and digital content while wearing official uniforms or publicly identifying themselves as members of the Nigeria Police Force without obtaining official approval.

The new order was disclosed in an official statement issued on Tuesday by the Force Public Relations Officer, Anietie Okokon Iniedu.

According to the statement, the Inspector-General acknowledged that social media remains an important communication tool in modern society but stressed that its use by police personnel must strictly align with existing laws, internal regulations, and the official Nigeria Police Force Social Media Policy.

The police leadership warned that officers are prohibited from producing or sharing unauthorised online content while in uniform, publicly commenting on official police matters without clearance, revealing confidential operational information, or using their position within the Force for personal promotion, entertainment purposes, or commercial activities.

Part of the statement read that officers must refrain from any online conduct capable of compromising operational security or damaging public confidence in the institution.

To ensure immediate compliance nationwide, the Inspector-General directed Commissioners of Police, heads of departments, and other supervisory officers across commands to sensitise officers under their authority and enforce strict adherence to the directive.

The police leadership further warned that commanding officers and supervisors would be held accountable if violations occur within their jurisdictions without appropriate disciplinary action being taken.

The statement added that supervisory officers are expected to actively monitor compliance and take immediate action against personnel who fail to comply with the directive.

In addition, the Inspector-General instructed the Force Intelligence Department alongside the X-Squad under the Professional Standards Department to intensify monitoring of social media platforms in order to identify police officers involved in activities considered inconsistent with professional standards and institutional ethics.

The Nigeria Police Force said the directive forms part of broader efforts aimed at strengthening discipline within the institution, promoting professionalism, and ensuring responsible communication between law enforcement personnel and the public.

Authorities added that the move is expected to reinforce public trust while protecting the institutional integrity of the police as security agencies continue internal reforms across the country.
