LAGOS GOVERNMENT SHUTS DOWN OSHODI MARKET AFTER ATTACK ON SANITATION OFFICERS


The Lagos State Government has ordered the immediate closure of the Oshodi Resettlement Market following an alleged attack on officials of the Lagos State Environmental Sanitation Corps during an enforcement exercise carried out in the area.

The shutdown was announced on Tuesday by the Lagos State Commissioner for Environment and Water Resources, Tokunbo Wahab, who disclosed that the action became necessary after traders at the market reportedly obstructed government officials while carrying out routine environmental enforcement operations.

According to the commissioner, officials of the sanitation agency were conducting an operation targeted at removing suspected hoodlums and beggars from the market environment when some traders allegedly resisted the exercise and attacked officers on duty.

Authorities said the confrontation escalated after enforcement personnel attempted to make arrests, with some individuals reportedly vandalising operational vehicles belonging to the sanitation agency during the incident.

In a statement shared via his official social media account, Wahab stated that the state government would not tolerate attacks on public officers performing their lawful responsibilities, stressing that enforcement operations aimed at maintaining environmental order across Lagos would continue.

The commissioner confirmed that the Oshodi Resettlement Market has now been sealed pending further directives from the state government.

As of the time of reporting, officials have not announced when the market will be reopened or what conditions traders may be required to meet before activities resume at the location.

The latest development is part of ongoing efforts by the Lagos State Government to strengthen environmental sanitation enforcement and maintain order in public spaces across the state.

The incident has generated public reactions, with many residents calling for improved cooperation between traders and government enforcement agencies to prevent similar confrontations in the future.
