OYO EXTENDS CURFEW IN 10 LGAS AS GOVERNMENT INTENSIFIES RESPONSE TO SCHOOL ABDUCTION CRISIS

The Oyo State Government has extended the curfew imposed on 10 local government areas bordering the Old Oyo National Park by an additional 24 hours as authorities intensify security operations following the recent school abduction incident in the state.

Governor Seyi Makinde approved the extension, according to an official memo issued on Thursday by the Secretary to the State Government, Musibau Babatunde. The announcement was also confirmed in a statement released by the governor’s Special Adviser on Media, Sulaimon Olanrewaju.

The curfew was initially introduced on June 23, 2026, restricting movement from 4:00 p.m. to 8:00 a.m. across the affected local government areas for 48 hours as part of emergency security measures aimed at restoring calm and supporting ongoing rescue operations.

With the latest extension, the curfew will now remain in effect until Saturday, June 27, 2026.

The affected local government areas include Oriire, Orelope, Irepo, Saki West, Saki East, Atisbo, Itesiwaju, Iseyin, Olorunsogo, and Atiba.

The government’s decision follows growing security concerns after armed bandits launched an attack on three schools on May 15, 2026, in Yawota and Ahoro-Esienle communities located in Oriire Local Government Area.

The affected schools were Baptist Nursery and Primary School, Community Grammar School, and L.A. Primary School.

During the attack, a teacher was reportedly killed while several schoolchildren and teachers were abducted by the attackers. Reports also indicated that one of the kidnapped teachers was later killed while being held captive.

The incident triggered widespread concern across the state, prompting the government to strengthen security measures around communities near the Old Oyo National Park, an area security agencies believe has become vulnerable to criminal activities.

Both the Federal Government and Oyo State Government have stated that security agencies are actively working to secure the safe release of all abducted victims.

Governor Makinde has repeatedly assured residents that every available effort is being deployed to ensure the abductees are rescued safely and reunited with their families.

The curfew extension is expected to assist ongoing security operations while authorities continue efforts to track down those responsible for the attack and prevent further security breaches in the region.
