OYO GOVERNMENT DECLARES TUESDAY WORK-FREE DAY FOR ISLAMIC NEW YEAR CELEBRATION


The Oyo State Government has officially declared Tuesday, June 16, 2026, as a work-free day across the state in observance of the Islamic New Year, Hijrah 1448 AH.

The announcement was made on Monday through an official statement issued by the Commissioner for Information, Prince Dotun Oyelade, on behalf of Governor Seyi Makinde’s administration.

According to the state government, the decision was taken to honour and celebrate the beginning of the new Islamic calendar year, which holds significant religious importance for Muslims around the world.

The government explained that the Hijrah marks the historic migration of Prophet Muhammad from Mecca to Medina in 622 AD, an event widely regarded as one of the most defining moments in Islamic history and the foundation of the Islamic calendar.

Prince Oyelade stated that the declaration of a work-free day reflects the state government’s recognition of the importance of the occasion to the Muslim faithful and demonstrates solidarity with the Islamic community in Oyo State.

He urged residents across the state to make use of the public holiday to pray for peace, unity, stability, and continued progress in both Oyo State and Nigeria as a whole.

The commissioner also encouraged citizens to reflect on the lessons of the Hijrah, particularly values centered on sacrifice, faith, patience, unity, and communal harmony.

According to the statement, the Islamic New Year should serve as an opportunity for citizens to come together in the spirit of brotherhood while seeking divine guidance for the nation’s development.

The declaration places Oyo State among several parts of Nigeria marking the commencement of Hijrah 1448 AH with official recognition, as Muslim communities begin celebrations and religious observances associated with the new year.

The state government reaffirmed its commitment to promoting religious tolerance and peaceful coexistence among residents regardless of faith or background.
