POLICE DISMISS VIRAL KATSINA VIDEO, SAY OFFICER WAS WITH VIGILANTES NOT BANDITS


The Nigeria Police Force has debunked claims circulating on social media alleging that a police officer was seen collaborating with armed bandits in Katsina State, describing the reports as false and misleading.

The controversy followed the circulation of a viral video that sparked public concern after users online claimed a uniformed police officer was interacting with suspected bandits in parts of Katsina.

In a statement issued on Wednesday, the Force Public Relations Officer, ACP Anietie Iniedu, clarified that the individuals captured in the video were not criminals but members of the Vigilante Group of Nigeria (VGN) and registered local hunters working alongside security agencies in ongoing anti-crime operations.

According to the police, the security volunteers are actively supporting operations in Musawa and Matazu Local Government Areas of Katsina State as part of broader efforts to tackle insecurity in the region.

The statement explained that the video merely showed a routine interaction between a police officer and the vigilante operatives as they moved toward a designated operational area.

The police stated that suggestions portraying the individuals as armed bandits were entirely inaccurate and designed to mislead the public.

Authorities also condemned what they described as deliberate attempts to distort facts capable of creating unnecessary fear among citizens and damaging public trust in Nigeria’s security institutions.

The Force warned individuals involved in spreading false or misleading security-related information to stop immediately, stressing that legal action could be taken against anyone found responsible for circulating content capable of threatening public peace.

The Nigeria Police Force further urged Nigerians to rely only on verified information released through official communication channels, especially on matters relating to national security.

The statement added that security agencies remain committed to collaborating with legitimate community-based security groups and other relevant stakeholders in ongoing efforts to combat crime, strengthen public safety, and protect lives and property across the country.

The clarification comes amid growing concerns over misinformation on social media and the increasing spread of unverified content surrounding security operations across different parts of Nigeria.
