POLICE LAUNCH CRACKDOWN ON TINTED VEHICLES, COVERED NUMBER PLATES IN ABUJA


The Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Police Command has commenced a major enforcement operation targeting vehicles with illegal tinted windows, concealed number plates, and improper registration documents as part of efforts to strengthen security across Abuja.

The Commissioner of Police for the FCT, Ahmed Sanusi, announced the initiative during a press briefing in Abuja on Friday, stating that the operation is aimed at addressing the growing use of such vehicles in criminal activities.

According to the police commissioner, intelligence reports have revealed that criminals frequently use vehicles with heavily tinted glass, covered number plates, and incomplete registration details to conceal their identities and evade security agencies.

Sanusi noted that these vehicles have been linked to various crimes, including the notorious "one-chance" robberies, kidnappings, and other security threats within the territory.

He explained that the enforcement exercise is designed to improve public safety and deny criminals the anonymity they often exploit while carrying out unlawful activities.

“This exercise is not intended to inconvenience law-abiding citizens who have legitimately acquired approval to use tinted glass on their vehicles. It is aimed at preventing criminals from using such vehicles as cover to commit crimes against residents,” he said.

The police chief disclosed that more than 30 vehicles found operating in violation of existing regulations have already been impounded since the commencement of the operation.

He added that owners and operators of the affected vehicles would face prosecution in accordance with relevant federal laws and the FCT Road Transport Regulations 2023.

Sanusi reaffirmed the command’s commitment to intelligence-driven policing and proactive crime prevention measures aimed at protecting lives and property throughout the Federal Capital Territory.

He also appealed to residents to cooperate with security agencies and support ongoing efforts to maintain law and order.

The commissioner further urged members of the public to remain vigilant and promptly report suspicious individuals, vehicles, or activities to the nearest police station or through the command’s emergency communication channels.

The enforcement operation is expected to continue across various parts of Abuja in the coming weeks as authorities intensify efforts to enhance security and curb criminal activities.
