TINUBU EXTENDS CUSTOMS BOSS ADENIYI’S TENURE BY SIX MONTHS


President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has approved a final six-month tenure extension for the Comptroller-General of the Nigeria Customs Service (NCS), Adewale Adeniyi, allowing him to remain in office until February 2027.

According to a statement issued by the Presidency on Friday, Adeniyi’s previous tenure extension was expected to expire on August 1, 2026, but the newly approved extension is aimed at enabling him to consolidate key ongoing reforms within the Customs Service.

The Presidency stated that the extension would specifically allow the Customs boss to complete the implementation of the National Single Window project, a major initiative designed to streamline trade processes, improve efficiency in cargo clearance, and strengthen revenue generation across Nigeria’s import and export sector.

The additional six months will also provide room for a smooth leadership transition within the Nigeria Customs Service. During the transition period, Adeniyi is expected to work closely with the Nigeria Customs Service Board to oversee the promotion of qualified officers to the rank of Comptroller of Customs.

Part of the responsibilities during the extension period will also include the compulsory retirement of officers who have reached the mandatory retirement age of 60 years or those who have completed 35 years in service, in line with civil service regulations.

Adewale Adeniyi has had a long career within the Nigeria Customs Service, having joined the agency shortly after graduating from Obafemi Awolowo University in the late 1980s.

Over the years, he steadily rose through the ranks, becoming Deputy Comptroller in 2012, Comptroller in 2017, Assistant Comptroller-General in 2020, and Acting Deputy Comptroller-General in January 2023.

President Tinubu appointed him as Comptroller-General of Customs in June 2023, a position he has held while overseeing several reforms aimed at modernizing customs operations and improving revenue collection.

The latest extension signals the Federal Government’s intention to maintain continuity in the implementation of critical reforms within the Nigeria Customs Service while preparing for an orderly succession process.
