NAF DEPLOYS SURVEILLANCE AIRCRAFT TO AID RESCUE OF ABDUCTED OYO PUPILS, TEACHERS

The Nigerian Air Force (NAF) has intensified efforts to support the rescue of teachers and pupils abducted by suspected bandits in Oriire Local Government Area of Oyo State, deploying aerial surveillance assets to assist ongoing search-and-rescue operations.

Governor Seyi Makinde disclosed the development during a courtesy visit by the representative of the Chief of the Air Staff, Air Marshal Sunday Kelvin Aneke, and the Air Officer Commanding Logistics Command, Air Vice Marshal Abubakar Suleh.

According to a statement issued by NAF spokesperson, Air Commodore Ehimen Ejodame, the Air Force swiftly deployed surveillance aircraft immediately after the abduction was reported on May 15, providing intelligence that has aided security agencies in tracking the kidnappers and coordinating rescue efforts.

Makinde commended the Nigerian Air Force for its rapid response and continued support, noting that the surveillance operations have been particularly valuable while Oyo State's newly acquired aerial security assets are still undergoing assembly at the NAF Base in Lagos.

The governor explained that the state procured the aircraft after consultations with the Air Force to ensure access to technical support, pilot training, and maintenance services. He expressed optimism that the assets would significantly strengthen security operations across Oyo State and neighboring regions once fully operational.

Speaking on behalf of the Chief of the Air Staff, Air Vice Marshal Suleh reaffirmed the NAF's commitment to collaborating with other security agencies to secure the safe return of the abducted victims and tackle security challenges nationwide.

The victims, comprising pupils and teachers from Baptist Nursery and Primary School, Yawota; Community Grammar School, Esiele; and L.A. Primary School, were kidnapped during a deadly attack on their communities. Reports indicate that one of the abducted teachers was later killed while in captivity.

The incident sparked widespread concern, leading to protests by teachers' unions and civil society groups, while the House of Representatives recently urged security agencies to intensify efforts to secure the victims' release.

In response to the security situation, President Bola Tinubu approved the recruitment of 1,000 forest guards and the deployment of a special rescue team to support ongoing operations in the affected areas.
