OIJEFON YOUTH COUNCIL PRESIDENT URGES ACTIVE YOUTH PARTICIPATION AS NIGERIA MARKS DEMOCRACY DAY


As Nigerians commemorated the 2026 Democracy Day celebration, the President of Oijefon Youth Council (OYC), Engr. Dokun Adeyonu, has called on young people across the country to embrace active participation in governance and nation-building, emphasizing that sustainable democracy depends largely on youth engagement and commitment to democratic values.

In his Democracy Day message released on June 12, Engr. Adeyonu extended greetings to the traditional institution, community leaders, youths, and Nigerians at large, acknowledging their contributions toward the growth and development of the nation. He described June 12 as a historic symbol of courage, sacrifice, and resilience, noting that the date remains a significant reminder of the struggle by Nigerians who stood firmly in defense of justice, freedom, and democratic governance.

According to him, democracy goes beyond the process of voting during elections, stressing that it also represents accountability, inclusion, participation, respect for the rule of law, and the collective responsibility of citizens toward national development.

The youth leader emphasized the critical role young people occupy in determining the future direction of communities and the country, stating that the strength and success of any democratic society depend on how actively young citizens engage in governance, community development, and social transformation. He urged youths to move beyond passive observation and become responsible stakeholders capable of contributing meaningfully to societal progress.

Engr. Adeyonu further noted that nation-building requires citizens who demonstrate integrity, patriotism, discipline, hard work, and dedication to service. He stated that young Nigerians must be willing to contribute their ideas, skills, talents, and resources toward solving challenges confronting society through sectors such as education, entrepreneurship, agriculture, technology, public service, and community development initiatives.

Speaking on the role of the Oijefon Youth Council, he reaffirmed the organization’s commitment to promoting leadership development, unity, civic responsibility, and constructive participation among young people within the community. He said the council remains focused on building a generation that prioritizes dialogue over division, service above personal interest, and progress over indifference.

As part of the Democracy Day reflection, Adeyonu urged Nigerians, particularly youths, to recommit themselves to democratic ideals by rejecting violence, corruption, intolerance, and actions capable of hindering national development. He encouraged citizens to embrace peace, unity, accountability, and active citizenship as essential ingredients for building a stronger and more prosperous nation.

He added that the future Nigerians desire cannot be achieved by chance, stressing that national progress requires intentional efforts from responsible citizens who understand that democracy thrives best when communities work together for the common good.

On behalf of the Executive Council of Oijefon Youth Council, Engr. Dokun Adeyonu wished Nigerians a peaceful and memorable Democracy Day celebration while praying for continued progress and development for Oijefon community, Ondo State, and the Federal Republic of Nigeria.
