ONDO SOUTH SENATORIAL BYE-ELECTION SET FOR JUNE 20


The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has fixed Saturday, June 20, 2026, for the conduct of the Ondo South Senatorial District bye-election following the vacancy created in the National Assembly.

The senatorial seat became vacant after Senator Jimoh Ibrahim was appointed as Nigeria’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations (UN). The Senate officially declared the seat vacant on April 28, 2026, and directed INEC to organize a bye-election in line with constitutional provisions.

The election will be held across the six local government areas that make up the Ondo South Senatorial District:

Ese-Odo

Odigbo

Ile-Oluji/Oke-Igbo

Voter Statistics

According to INEC, the district has:

673,446 registered voters

1,354 polling units

66 electoral wards

Political Parties Participating

The electoral body has cleared four political parties to participate in the bye-election:

All Progressives Congress (APC)

Allied Peoples’ Movement (APM)

Action Peoples Party (APP)

Boot Party

Election to Hold Alongside Other Polls

The Ondo South senatorial contest will take place on the same day as the Ekiti State Governorship Election and several other bye-elections scheduled in Enugu, Nasarawa, Rivers, and Kano States.

INEC Assures Transparency

INEC has assured voters and stakeholders that it will deploy the Bimodal Voter Accreditation System (BVAS) and the INEC Result Viewing Portal (IReV) to enhance transparency and credibility throughout the electoral process.

The commission also reminded eligible voters that only those with valid Permanent Voter Cards (PVCs) will be allowed to vote, noting that individuals currently participating in the ongoing Continuous Voter Registration (CVR) exercise will not be eligible for this particular election.

As political activities gather momentum ahead of the poll, attention is expected to focus on who will emerge victorious in the race to represent Ondo South in the Senate.
