OONI URGES YORUBA MONARCHS TO DEPLOY TRADITIONAL HERITAGE AGAINST BANDITRY, KIDNAPPING


The Ooni of Ife, Oba Adeyeye Enitan Ogunwusi, has called on traditional rulers across Yorubaland to strengthen efforts in tackling insecurity by leveraging traditional institutions, cultural values, and community structures to combat banditry and kidnapping.

The monarch made the appeal during the grand finale of the 2026 Ifa Festival held in Ile-Ife, Osun State, where he expressed concern over the growing security challenges affecting communities across the region and the country.

According to a statement issued by his spokesperson, Moses Olafare, the Ooni emphasized the need for traditional rulers to work closely with government authorities, security agencies, and local communities to address criminal activities and restore peace.

Oba Ogunwusi stated that traditional institutions have a vital role to play in preserving peace and protecting communities. He urged monarchs to promote communal values, strengthen local intelligence gathering, and support ongoing security operations aimed at curbing banditry and kidnapping.

He noted that insecurity remains one of the major challenges facing Nigeria and stressed that lasting solutions would require collaboration among all stakeholders, including traditional rulers, religious leaders, community groups, and citizens.

While acknowledging efforts by the Federal Government to improve security across the country, the Ooni said collective responsibility remains essential to achieving sustainable peace and stability.

The monarch also used the occasion to offer prayers for the safe release of schoolchildren and teachers abducted in recent attacks in Oyo and Borno states. He described the incidents as unfortunate and called for continued support for security agencies working to secure the victims' freedom.

The annual Ifa Festival, a significant cultural and spiritual event in Yorubaland, attracted traditional leaders, cultural enthusiasts, and dignitaries from various parts of the country.
