TINUBU TO ADDRESS JOINT NATIONAL ASSEMBLY SESSION ON DEMOCRACY DAY


President Bola Ahmed Tinubu is set to address a joint session of the National Assembly on June 12 as part of activities lined up to commemorate Nigeria's 2026 Democracy Day celebration.

The planned address forms a key part of a nationwide programme approved by the Federal Government to honour the country's democratic journey and the sacrifices of those who fought for democratic governance.

The announcement followed the inauguration of an Inter-Ministerial Committee by the Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF), Senator George Akume, who charged members to begin immediate preparations for the celebration.

According to the committee, activities scheduled ahead of Democracy Day include a World Press Conference on June 4, special Juma’at prayers on June 5, an inter-denominational church service on June 7, a Democracy Day public lecture on June 9, youth and women-focused programmes on June 10, a presidential broadcast on June 12, and a Democracy Day Gala Night.

Speaking during the inauguration, Akume described Democracy Day as an important opportunity for Nigerians to reflect on the sacrifices made by patriots who fought for the entrenchment of democratic rule in the country. He noted that the democratic institutions and values being strengthened across Nigeria today were built on the struggles and commitment of individuals who championed the cause of democracy.

The SGF paid tribute to the late Chief Moshood Kashimawo Olawale (MKO) Abiola and other heroes of the June 12 struggle, noting that Abiola's sacrifice and commitment played a major role in the eventual recognition of June 12 as Nigeria's official Democracy Day.

Akume also said this year's celebration would provide an opportunity for the Federal Government to showcase progress made in strengthening democratic institutions, implementing reforms, and promoting national development. He stated that the Tinubu administration would use the occasion to reaffirm its commitment to democratic ideals despite prevailing socio-economic challenges.

He emphasized that the 2026 celebration would be modest but purposeful, in line with the administration's commitment to fiscal responsibility. The SGF expressed confidence in the committee's ability to deliver a successful event and urged all stakeholders to work together to ensure a memorable commemoration.

The Inter-Ministerial Committee is chaired by the SGF and includes several ministers, security chiefs, and senior government officials, including the Ministers of Information, Interior, Defence, Finance and Foreign Affairs, the National Security Adviser, the Inspector-General of Police, and the Director-General of the Department of State Services.

Nigeria observes Democracy Day every June 12 in honour of the historic June 12, 1993 presidential election, widely regarded as one of the freest and fairest elections in the country's history and believed to have been won by the late MKO Abiola. The day remains a symbol of the nation's democratic struggle and its continued commitment to democratic governance.
