TROOPS ARREST FIVE SUSPECTED BANDIT INFORMANTS, RECOVER PHONES AND CASH IN NIGER STATE


Troops of Joint Task Force (JTF) Operation Savannah Shield have arrested five suspected bandit and terrorist informants during separate security operations in Niger State, recovering communication devices, cash, and other items believed to be linked to criminal activities.

According to a statement issued on Sunday by the Acting Media Information Officer of Operation Savannah Shield, Captain Jamilu Muhammed Yahaya, the arrests were made during routine patrol operations aimed at disrupting criminal networks operating within the North-Central region.

The statement disclosed that troops on a fighting patrol along the Doro axis in Wawa, Borgu Local Government Area, apprehended three suspected informants on June 6, 2026. Preliminary investigations reportedly linked the suspects to a bandit group operating around Duru and the fringes of the Kainji Lake National Park.

Security operatives recovered two Tecno keypad phones, an MP3 device, and a cash sum of ₦113,400 from the suspects. Authorities said the MP3 device contained recorded messages, including alleged propaganda and claims relating to a kidnapping incident in Kaduna State.

In a separate operation, troops of the 221 Battalion under Operation Savannah Shield arrested two additional suspects during a routine patrol around a military cantonment.

Initial investigations suggested that the suspects were allegedly gathering intelligence on the cantonment for criminal elements. A search of one suspect's mobile phone reportedly uncovered a photograph of a beheaded individual dated May 2, 2026, which security officials said is being examined as part of ongoing investigations.

Items recovered from the suspects included an Android mobile phone, a Tecno keypad phone, a motorcycle, and ₦86,100 in cash.

The military confirmed that all suspects and recovered exhibits remain in custody while further investigations continue. Security agencies are also intensifying efforts to identify and apprehend other members of the suspected criminal network.

Operation Savannah Shield stated that the arrests reflect ongoing efforts to dismantle support structures that enable banditry and terrorism across the North-Central region. The task force reaffirmed its commitment to sustaining operations aimed at protecting lives and maintaining peace and security within its area of responsibility.
