TROOPS, DSS DISCOVER SUSPECTED IPOB/ESN ARMS HIDEOUT IN ENUGU, RECOVER WEAPONS


Security forces have uncovered a suspected arms cache linked to members of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) and its armed wing, the Eastern Security Network (ESN), during a joint operation in Enugu State.

The operation was carried out by troops of the 82 Division Garrison under Sector 1 of Operation UDO KA in collaboration with operatives of the Department of State Services (DSS), Enugu State Command, as part of ongoing efforts to strengthen security and sustain peace in the South-East region.

According to a statement issued by the Acting Deputy Director, Army Public Relations, 82 Division Nigerian Army, Lieutenant Colonel Olabisi Olalekan Ayeni, the operation was conducted on June 9 following actionable intelligence obtained from previously arrested suspects.

The statement said security operatives carried out a follow-up operation in Gariki, Enugu South Local Government Area, where they discovered a concealed arms storage facility allegedly linked to criminal elements.

Authorities disclosed that the suspected hideout was located inside a zinc structure reportedly disguised as a piggery. A subsequent search of the location led to the recovery of a significant quantity of weapons, ammunition, and related military hardware.

Items recovered during the operation included General Purpose Machine Guns (GPMG), an RPG-7 launcher tube, AK-47 rifles, hand grenades, a tear gas gun with cartridges, several AK-47 magazines, 270 rounds of 7.62mm NATO ammunition, and 478 rounds of 7.62mm Special ammunition.

Security officials described the discovery as a major operational breakthrough in ongoing efforts to dismantle criminal networks and prevent acts capable of threatening public safety and national security.

The Army stated that all recovered weapons and arrested suspects have been handed over to the Department of State Services for further investigation and possible prosecution in accordance with the law.

Military authorities noted that the operation highlights the importance of intelligence gathering and inter-agency collaboration in addressing security challenges within the region.

They added that Operation UDO KA remains committed to sustaining pressure on criminal groups and other elements involved in activities that threaten peace, stability, and economic development in the South-East.

The security agencies also appealed to residents to continue supporting ongoing operations by providing credible and timely information that could assist in preventing criminal activities and enhancing public safety.

Authorities emphasized that cooperation between citizens and security agencies remains vital to achieving lasting peace and security across the region.
