President Donald Trump received a mixed reception from fans at Madison Square Garden on Monday night as he became the first sitting United States president to attend an NBA Finals game.

Trump attended Game 3 of the NBA Finals between the New York Knicks and the San Antonio Spurs, marking a historic presidential appearance at the league's championship series. However, his presence also brought heightened security measures that disrupted movement around the arena and drew complaints from some fans.

The crowd reaction became noticeable during the national anthem when Trump appeared on the arena's giant video screens. Loud boos were heard from sections of the crowd as the president saluted during the performance.

The president was accompanied by his granddaughter, Kai Trump, New York Knicks owner James Dolan, and several members of his administration, including Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy, Interior Secretary Doug Burgum, Environmental Protection Agency Administrator Lee Zeldin, and Special Envoy Steve Witkoff.

Extensive Security Measures

Trump's visit led to extraordinary security arrangements around Madison Square Garden. Roads surrounding the venue were closed to both vehicle and pedestrian traffic, while thousands of New York Police Department officers and hundreds of Secret Service personnel were deployed.

Fans attending the game faced lengthy delays as security screenings created lines stretching for several city blocks. Metal barricades were installed throughout the area, and access points operated under strict security procedures.

The restrictions also affected nearby businesses. Several bars and restaurants that had expected large crowds for the NBA Finals reported lower-than-expected foot traffic due to road closures and security checkpoints.

Fans Express Mixed Reactions

Many Knicks supporters expressed frustration over the disruption caused by the presidential visit.

Some fans said the heightened security made it difficult to enjoy the atmosphere surrounding one of the most significant sporting events in New York City in recent years.

A community watch party planned near Madison Square Garden was reportedly cancelled because of the security arrangements, prompting fans to gather in other locations across Manhattan.

Despite the inconvenience, some attendees welcomed Trump's presence at the game, viewing it as a sign of the NBA Finals' national significance.

Knicks' Historic Finals Return

The NBA Finals appearance represents a major milestone for the New York Knicks, who are competing in their first championship series since 1999.

The team entered Game 3 with a 2-0 series lead over the San Antonio Spurs after winning the opening two games. The excitement surrounding the Knicks' postseason run has energized New York City, with thousands of supporters gathering at watch parties and public viewing locations across Manhattan.

Prominent figures attending the game included New York Mayor Zohran Mamdani and several celebrities, among them Timothée Chalamet, Tina Fey, Tracy Morgan, Ben Stiller, Larry David, Spike Lee, former baseball star Derek Jeter, and former NFL quarterback Eli Manning.

The demand for tickets highlighted the significance of the event. Resale prices reportedly exceeded $10,000 for some seats, with premium tickets reaching much higher figures.

As New York celebrated its long-awaited return to the NBA Finals, Trump's appearance added a political dimension to one of the city's biggest sporting nights, drawing both support and criticism from fans gathered to watch championship basketball.
