US LAUNCHES RETALIATORY STRIKES ON IRAN AFTER HELICOPTER INCIDENT IN STRAIT OF HORMUZ

The United States has carried out retaliatory military strikes on Iran following an incident involving the downing of an American Apache helicopter near the strategic Strait of Hormuz, according to US Central Command (CENTCOM).

The operation, which began at about 17:00 EST (22:00 BST) on Tuesday, was described by CENTCOM as a “proportional response to unjustified Iranian aggression.” US officials said the strikes targeted Iranian air defence and radar systems in the southern part of the country.

The escalation followed reports that a US military helicopter was downed during patrol operations near the Strait of Hormuz earlier in the week. The two crew members on board were reportedly rescued by a US sea drone and later transported to safety in stable condition.

Former US President Donald Trump, reacting to the incident, said the United States would respond strongly, describing the action as necessary following what he termed an attack on American forces. He stated that the response would be “very strong, very powerful,” adding that the US was acting in response to the downing of the aircraft.

Iranian officials, however, have denied responsibility for directly targeting the helicopter. Iran’s Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi, speaking on social media platform X, warned that the country’s armed forces would respond to any further aggression, stating that Iran would not leave any attack unanswered. He also cautioned foreign forces to stay out of the region for their own safety.

The incident has further heightened tensions in the Gulf region, particularly around the Strait of Hormuz, one of the world’s most critical maritime routes for global oil shipments. Iranian state media also reported increased air defence activity and explosions along parts of the Persian Gulf coast, including Bandar Abbas and surrounding areas.

Analysts warn that the latest exchange marks a dangerous escalation in an already volatile regional conflict, with fears of a broader confrontation involving major global powers if tensions continue to rise.

At the time of reporting, neither side had confirmed the full extent of the damage caused by the strikes, while diplomatic reactions from international partners are being closely watched as the situation develops.
