AKEREDOLU HONOURED AS FAMILY, FRIENDS MARK HIS 70TH POSTHUMOUS BIRTHDAY IN OWO


Family members, friends, political associates, and admirers on Tuesday gathered in Owo, Ondo State, to commemorate the 70th posthumous birthday of former Ondo State Governor, the late Arakunrin Oluwarotimi Odunayo Akeredolu (SAN), with a special thanksgiving service.

The memorial service, held at his residence in the Government Reserved Area (GRA), Owo, attracted dignitaries from across Nigeria who paid glowing tributes to the late statesman and former governor.

Speakers at the event described Akeredolu as a courageous leader, principled politician, and committed public servant whose contributions to the development of Ondo State and Nigeria continue to inspire many. They also offered prayers in his memory while reflecting on his legacy of service, integrity, and dedication to good governance.

His widow, Betty Anyanwu-Akeredolu, attended the thanksgiving service alongside family members and other guests.

Akeredolu passed away on December 27, 2023, after a prolonged illness while serving as governor of Ondo State. He was 67 years old.

Born on July 21, 1956, he studied Law at the then University of Ife, now Obafemi Awolowo University, and was called to the Nigerian Bar in 1978. He attained the rank of Senior Advocate of Nigeria (SAN) in 1998 and served as Ondo State Attorney General and Commissioner for Justice between 1997 and 1999.

In 2008, he was elected President of the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA), where he gained national recognition for his advocacy of the rule of law, constitutional democracy, and judicial independence.

Akeredolu was elected Governor of Ondo State on the platform of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in the November 2016 governorship election and assumed office on February 24, 2017. His administration focused on infrastructure development, healthcare, education, industrialisation, and security, including championing the establishment of the South-West Security Network, codenamed Amotekun.

Following his re-election in October 2020, he was sworn in for a second term on February 24, 2021, and remained in office until his passing in December 2023.

Many attendees at the memorial service said his legacy of bold leadership, public service, and commitment to the growth of Ondo State continues to be remembered and celebrated.
