AKPABIO MOCKS PDP, SAYS HE DIDN’T KNOW OPPOSITION PARTY STILL EXISTS



Senate President Godswill Akpabio on Wednesday stirred political reactions after making remarks questioning the continued relevance of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) while urging the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, to allow the opposition party “fade away.”


Akpabio made the statement while representing President Bola Ahmed Tinubu during the inauguration of Akinwumi Ajibola Street in the Gaduwa District of Abuja.


During his address at the event, the Senate President acknowledged several dignitaries in attendance, including Senator Olaka Nwogu, who recently emerged winner of the Rivers South-East Senatorial District by-election under the platform of the PDP.


Referencing the presence of the lawmaker, Akpabio jokingly remarked that he was unaware the PDP was still active, a comment that immediately drew attention because of the ongoing political tensions involving members of the opposition party.


According to him, political parties that have lost relevance should be allowed to naturally decline, while making a direct remark toward Nyesom Wike, whose continued political influence within both the PDP and the APC-led federal government has remained a subject of public discussion.


The Senate President also avoided making comments regarding the PDP’s internal affairs, reiterating that the party’s relevance appeared to have diminished significantly.


Senator Olaka Nwogu was recently declared winner of the Rivers South-East Senatorial by-election conducted by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), securing 47,961 votes ahead of the All Progressives Congress candidate, Osar Erewari, who polled 1,647 votes.


The by-election was conducted following the death of former lawmaker Senator Barry Mpigi earlier this year.


Akpabio also used the opportunity to commend Nyesom Wike for what he described as strong performance in office as Minister of the Federal Capital Territory.


He noted that ongoing infrastructure development projects across Abuja under Wike’s leadership have attracted attention nationwide, with several observers acknowledging visible changes within the nation’s capital.


Wike, who remains a member of the PDP despite serving in the APC-led administration, has continued to be at the center of internal political disagreements within the opposition party.


Political analysts say the latest comments by Akpabio may further intensify ongoing debates surrounding opposition politics and shifting alliances ahead of future political developments in the country.
