AKWA IBOM GOVERNOR URGES CORPS MEMBERS TO EMBRACE ENTREPRENEURSHIP OVER WHITE-COLLAR JOBS


Akwa Ibom State Governor, Pastor Umo Eno, has encouraged National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) members serving in the state to embrace entrepreneurship and self-employment rather than relying solely on increasingly scarce white-collar jobs after completing their national service.

The governor made the appeal on Tuesday while declaring open the 2026 NYSC Corps Employers' Workshop in Uyo. The workshop, themed "Fine-Tuning Stakeholders' Collaboration to Enhance Corps Members' Welfare Experience," focused on strengthening partnerships to improve the welfare and service experience of corps members.

Represented by the Commissioner for Youth Development, Dr. Ekerette Ekanem, Governor Eno urged corps members to take full advantage of the NYSC Skills Acquisition and Entrepreneurship Development (SAED) programme, describing it as a vital platform for building sustainable careers and achieving financial independence.

According to him, Nigeria's growing population and limited employment opportunities make entrepreneurship a more practical path for young graduates.

He noted that entrepreneurs have greater opportunities to create jobs for others, stressing that corps members should aspire to become employers of labour instead of job seekers.

Governor Eno also commended corps members posted to Akwa Ibom State for their dedication, discipline and valuable contributions to the state's development. He referenced a corps member who recently received the State Award for Excellence after serving at Comprehensive Secondary School, Okobo, describing the recognition as an encouragement for all corps members across the country.

Speaking at the event, the Director-General of the NYSC, Brigadier General Olakunle Nafiu, represented by the Director of the NYSC South-South Area Office II, Mr. Godfrey Nwaje, described corps employers as essential partners in the success of the national service scheme.

He called on employers to provide conducive work environments, effective mentorship and improved welfare packages for corps members. He also reminded organisations of their responsibilities, including providing accommodation or accommodation allowance, transportation support, healthcare services, security, and opportunities for corps members to participate in Community Development Service (CDS) and other official NYSC activities.

Nafiu stressed the need for workplaces that are respectful, supportive and free from discrimination, harassment, exploitation and abuse. He expressed confidence that the workshop would produce practical recommendations to strengthen collaboration between stakeholders and further improve the welfare of corps members nationwide.

Earlier, the Akwa Ibom State NYSC Coordinator, Mrs. Ngozi Akuagbaogu, explained that the annual workshop was organised to strengthen collaboration among the NYSC, corps employers and other stakeholders while addressing emerging challenges affecting corps administration.

She said the forum would also assess existing initiatives, identify challenges and develop strategies to improve corps members' productivity, welfare and overall service experience.

The NYSC Skills Acquisition and Entrepreneurship Development (SAED) programme was introduced to equip corps members with vocational and entrepreneurial skills, promoting self-reliance in response to rising unemployment and the limited availability of white-collar jobs in Nigeria.
