APC CHIEFTAIN SAYS CHRISTIANS NOW MORE COMFORTABLE WITH TINUBU-SHETTIMA TICKET AHEAD OF 2027


A chieftain of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Farouk Aliyu, has said many Christians are now more comfortable with the party's Muslim-Muslim presidential ticket than they were before the 2023 general election.

Aliyu made the remarks during an appearance on Arise Television's The Morning Show on Thursday while defending President Bola Tinubu's decision to retain Vice President Kashim Shettima as his running mate for the 2027 presidential election.

According to him, concerns raised before the 2023 election that Christians would be marginalised under a Muslim-Muslim presidency have not materialised since the Tinubu administration assumed office.

He stated that President Tinubu has governed the country without religious bias, adding that Nigerians have not experienced discrimination along religious lines under the current administration.

Aliyu said the APC leadership was satisfied with retaining the Tinubu-Shettima ticket, noting that changing the vice-presidential candidate could have created unnecessary political challenges for the party.

He also expressed optimism that Nigerians would once again support the APC ticket in the 2027 presidential election, citing what he described as the confidence reposed in the party during the 2023 polls.

The APC's decision to field Bola Tinubu, a Muslim from the South-West, alongside Kashim Shettima, a Muslim from the North-East, in the 2023 presidential election generated widespread debate across Nigeria. Several Christian groups, including the Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) and the Pentecostal Fellowship of Nigeria (PFN), opposed the decision, arguing that it departed from the country's long-standing tradition of balancing presidential tickets along religious lines.

However, the APC maintained that its choice was based on competence and electoral strategy rather than religion. Tinubu and Shettima subsequently won the 2023 presidential election and were inaugurated on May 29, 2023.

Aliyu's latest comments come as political parties gradually begin positioning themselves ahead of the 2027 general elections.
