APC TICKET STORM: FORMER ILAJE CHAIRMAN REJECTS DOUBLE TICKETS FOR AROGBO WARD, DEMANDS FAIRNESS IN ONDO SOUTH


A former Chairman of Ilaje Local Government Area, Hon. Banji Ben Okunomo, has called on the leadership of the All Progressives Congress (APC) to review what he described as an unfair allocation of the Ondo South Senatorial and Ilaje/Ese-Odo Federal Constituency tickets to candidates from the same ward.

In a statement, Okunomo said that although he initially supported the decision for the Ondo South Senatorial ticket to be zoned to Ese-Odo Local Government Area while the House of Representatives ticket went to Ilaje Local Government Area, subsequent developments have prompted him to reassess his position.

According to him, changing political circumstances require a fresh evaluation of the arrangement. He noted that he had expected the APC's senatorial candidate, who is also a member of the party's National Working Committee (NWC), to use his influence to prevent what many stakeholders consider an imbalance in the distribution of key elective positions.

Okunomo argued that allocating both the Ondo South Senatorial ticket and the Ilaje/Ese-Odo Federal Constituency ticket to Arogbo Ward 1 in Ese-Odo Local Government Area has generated concerns among party members over fairness, equity, balanced representation, and the APC's electoral prospects.

He stressed that his position is not directed against any individual, including Hon. Mayowa Akinfolarin Ojogo or Hon. Isaac Kekemeke, but is based on what he described as the principles of justice, equity, fairness, and political balance.

According to the former council chairman, it would be difficult to justify a situation where one ward within a single local government secures both the Senate and House of Representatives tickets in the same election cycle, particularly in a federal constituency comprising 22 wards and a senatorial district made up of 66 wards.

He maintained that such an arrangement could create a perception of exclusion among other communities with political aspirations and potentially affect party cohesion.

Okunomo further stated that his views reflect the concerns expressed by many people within the constituency who believe that the distribution of the two major elective positions should be guided by equity and inclusiveness.

He urged the APC leadership to uphold the party's principles of internal democracy, justice, and fairness by ensuring that no section of the constituency feels marginalised.

The legal practitioner concluded that promoting equity in the allocation of the Senate and House of Representatives tickets would strengthen party unity, stability, and its electoral chances ahead of the forthcoming elections.
