AIYEDATIWA ADVANCES PUBLIC WATER REVIVAL AS ONDO WATER SUPPLY PROJECT GATHERS MOMENTUM
The Ondo State Government says significant progress is being recorded in its efforts to restore public water supply across the state through the ongoing rehabilitation and expansion of water infrastructure.
According to a statement issued on Monday by the Special Adviser to the Governor on Communication and Strategy, Allen Sowore, Governor Lucky Orimisan Aiyedatiwa's administration is advancing the AFD-assisted Urban Water Supply Project aimed at revitalising the Owena Water Treatment Plant and improving access to potable water for residents.
The statement noted that construction activities are currently ongoing in Akure and surrounding communities, including Ado Road, Igoba, Isinigbo and Oda, where engineers and contractors are laying new transmission pipelines and upgrading critical water infrastructure.
The project includes the construction of new transmission mains from the Owena Water Treatment Plant to Akure, the development of modern water reservoirs with a combined capacity of 7,500 cubic metres, and the expansion of the water distribution network across the state capital.
Beyond Akure, the intervention is expected to improve water supply and sanitation services in seven local government areas: Akure South, Akure North, Idanre, Ifedore, Ile-Oluji/Okeigbo, Ondo East and Ondo West.
The state government said the project is designed to enhance access to clean and safe drinking water, improve public health, support economic activities and raise the standard of living of residents.
It also stated that the Commissioner for Water Resources, Public Sanitation and Hygiene, Hon. Ayodele Akande, has continued to monitor project sites to ensure quality execution and timely completion.
The government expressed appreciation to its development partners, including the French Development Agency (AFD), the African Development Bank (AfDB), the African Growing Together Fund (AGTF), and the Federal Government of Nigeria for their support towards the successful implementation of the project.
The administration maintained that the ongoing intervention represents a significant step towards restoring reliable public water supply and strengthening water infrastructure across Ondo State.
