POLICE LAUNCH MANHUNT AFTER GUNMEN KILL LAGOS NURTW OFFICIAL


The Lagos State Police Command has commenced a manhunt for gunmen responsible for the killing of the Organising Secretary of the Lagos State chapter of the National Union of Road Transport Workers (NURTW), Toba Ajiboye, popularly known as Toba Ijaiya.

According to police, the attack occurred on Sunday evening when unidentified gunmen opened fire on Ajiboye's vehicle as he was leaving the Fadeyi area of Lagos after reportedly visiting the community.

Ajiboye sustained multiple gunshot wounds during the attack and was rushed to a nearby hospital, where he later died on Tuesday despite efforts by medical personnel to save his life.

Confirming the incident, the Lagos State Police Public Relations Officer, CSP Abimbola Adebisi, said an investigation has begun and security operatives are working to apprehend those behind the attack.

She also assured residents that security had been reinforced in the area, adding that there was no cause for panic as additional police personnel had been deployed.

A source familiar with the incident said the deceased had regularly visited the Fadeyi community because it was where he grew up. According to the source, he was leaving the area when the assailants attacked his vehicle.

Another union member, identified simply as Taofeek, disclosed that three other occupants of the vehicle also sustained gunshot injuries during the attack and are receiving treatment in hospital. Their condition was described as critical.

The killing has sparked concern among residents, with calls for increased security to prevent further violence and maintain law and order.

Photographs circulating on social media showed Ajiboye's vehicle riddled with bullet holes, while the motive for the attack had yet to be established as of the time of filing the report.

Reacting to the incident, Lagos State NURTW Chairman, Mustapha Adekunle, popularly known as Sego, expressed deep sorrow over Ajiboye's death, describing him as a loyal ally, trusted friend and dedicated union leader.

In a tribute shared on his Facebook page, Sego said the late organising secretary remained a dependable pillar of the union whose loyalty and commitment would always be remembered. He also extended condolences to the deceased's family, friends and members of the transport union.
