SPAIN EDGE ARGENTINA AFTER EXTRA TIME TO WIN 2026 FIFA WORLD CUP


Spain have been crowned champions of the 2026 FIFA World Cup after defeating Argentina 1-0 in extra time in Sunday's final at the New York New Jersey Stadium.

The closely contested final ended goalless after regulation time despite Spain enjoying much of the possession and creating several opportunities against the defending champions.

The decisive moment came in the 106th minute when Nico Williams delivered a header into the path of Barcelona forward Ferran Torres, who fired home past Argentina goalkeeper Emiliano Martínez to give La Roja the lead.

Argentina responded with sustained pressure in search of an equaliser, with captain Lionel Messi orchestrating several attacking moves in what has been widely described as his expected final FIFA World Cup appearance. However, Spain's disciplined defence, led by goalkeeper Unai Simón, held firm to secure the victory.

Spain's triumph marks the country's second FIFA World Cup title, following its maiden success at the 2010 tournament in South Africa. The victory also makes Spain the first European nation to win the FIFA World Cup on American soil.

Throughout the tournament, Spain impressed with a blend of their traditional possession-based football and a more direct attacking approach, conceding only one goal on their way to lifting the trophy.
