OLUBADAN INAUGURATES COMMITTEE TO DRIVE INTEGRATION OF TRADITIONAL AND ORTHODOX MEDICINE



The Olubadan of Ibadanland, Oba Rashidi Ladoja, has inaugurated a committee tasked with advancing the integration of traditional and orthodox medicine as part of efforts to strengthen healthcare delivery in Nigeria.


The inauguration ceremony was held on Wednesday at the committee room of the Olubadan Palace located in Oke Aremo, Ibadan North Local Government Area of Oyo State.


Speaking during the event through the Director-General of the Olubadan Palace, Basiru Olanrewaju, the monarch explained that the initiative was designed to ensure that both traditional and modern medical practices complement one another for improved healthcare services.


According to the royal father, the integration of both healthcare systems is necessary to serve the broader interest of the people, not only in Ibadanland but across the country.


Oba Ladoja noted that traditional medicine has continued to play an important role in healthcare delivery, stressing that combining indigenous medical knowledge with orthodox healthcare practices could significantly improve access to effective treatment options.


He emphasized the need to preserve the knowledge and contributions of traditional medical practitioners while encouraging collaboration between both sectors for national development.


The monarch also urged members of the newly inaugurated committee to remain committed to achieving the objective of the initiative and ensuring practical outcomes that will benefit the public.


Representatives from key stakeholder groups attended the inauguration, including officials from the Forestry Research Institute of Nigeria, members of the Pharmaceutical Society of Nigeria, representatives of the Olubadan Palace, and researchers involved in traditional medicine studies.


Members of the committee reportedly agreed to hold regular meetings as part of efforts to ensure the successful implementation of their assignment.


The move follows an earlier position expressed by the Olubadan in May 2026, where he advocated stronger collaboration between traditional medicine practitioners and modern healthcare institutions.


Observers say the initiative could open wider discussions on how indigenous healthcare knowledge can be preserved and integrated into Nigeria’s evolving healthcare system while maintaining professional standards and patient safety.
