PETER OBI URGES INEC TO EXTEND VOTER REGISTRATION AHEAD OF 2027 GENERAL ELECTION


The presidential candidate of the Nigerian Democratic Congress (NDC), Peter Obi, has appealed to the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to extend the ongoing Continuous Voter Registration (CVR) exercise to the latest practical date ahead of the 2027 general elections.

In a statement issued on Thursday, Obi said extending the registration period would ensure that more eligible Nigerians, particularly young people who turn 18 before the elections, are not excluded from participating in the democratic process.

According to him, every day more Nigerians attain the constitutional voting age of 18 and should be given the opportunity to register and vote.

"They are not just our future; they are stakeholders in our present. It would be unfortunate if many of them were denied the opportunity to exercise their civic responsibility simply because the registration process closed long before the elections," Obi said.

The former Anambra State governor also cited a Federal High Court judgment delivered on November 22, 2022, in the case of Anaja Salmat & 3 Others v. INEC, which he said held that voter registration should continue until 90 days before a general election to safeguard the constitutional voting rights of eligible Nigerians.

Obi acknowledged the enormous responsibility placed on INEC to conduct free, fair, and credible elections, noting that the commission also requires sufficient time to clean the voters' register and make necessary logistical preparations.

However, he stressed that the electoral process should prioritise broad participation rather than limit it.

"A democracy is strengthened when every eligible citizen has the opportunity to be heard," he stated.

Obi urged INEC to adopt a voter registration timeline that balances the integrity of the electoral process with the need to ensure that no eligible Nigerian, especially first-time voters, is unnecessarily disenfranchised ahead of the 2027 polls.
