THREE POLICE OFFICERS SHOT AS OSUN NURTW FACTIONAL CLASH TURNS VIOLENT


Three police officers are receiving medical treatment after sustaining gunshot injuries during a violent clash between rival factions of the National Union of Road Transport Workers (NURTW) in Osogbo, the Osun State capital.

The Osun State Police Command confirmed the incident on Tuesday through its spokesperson, SP Abiodun Ojelabi, who said the violence erupted after one faction of the NURTW protested being denied access to a motor park by a rival group.

According to the police, the protest escalated into violent confrontations across major motor parks in Osogbo, prompting security operatives to intervene and restore order.

Ojelabi disclosed that at about 5:30 p.m., the command received a distress call reporting sporadic gunfire by suspected hoodlums in the Oke-Ijetu area of Osogbo. Operatives of the Anti-Robbery and Violent Crime Response Unit were immediately deployed to the scene.

He said the hoodlums, suspected to be loyal to one Wakili Alowonle, allegedly opened fire on the police team upon arrival.

As a result, three police officers sustained varying degrees of gunshot injuries and are currently receiving treatment at a hospital.

The police also confirmed the arrest of a 40-year-old suspect identified as Adedeji Saheed Opeyemi during the operation.

According to the command, the suspect allegedly confessed during preliminary interrogation that he was invited by an individual identified as "Sibi," who reportedly handed him a pump-action gun after receiving instructions from Alowonle to meet at Oke-Ijetu.

Items recovered during the operation include six expended cartridges, four vehicles, four motorcycles, military camouflage and charms.

The Osun State Police Command said investigations are ongoing to apprehend other suspects connected with the incident.
