TINUBU APPROVES EXPANSION OF NIGERIAN ARMY TO 12 DIVISIONS, RECRUITMENT OF 28,000 PERSONNEL


President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has approved the expansion of the Nigerian Army from eight to 12 divisions as part of efforts to strengthen the country's security architecture and enhance the military's operational effectiveness.

The approval also includes the recruitment of 28,000 additional military personnel to boost the Army's capacity to respond to Nigeria's evolving security challenges.

The development was announced on Thursday in a statement issued by the Special Adviser to the President on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga.

According to the Presidency, the decision underscores the administration's commitment to equipping the Armed Forces with the personnel, resources and infrastructure needed to tackle insecurity across the country.

The expansion forms part of broader investments in the military, including the acquisition of critical military equipment, improved troop welfare, enhanced operational readiness and ongoing force modernisation.

Under the new structure, four additional divisions will be established in Makurdi, Ilorin, Jalingo and Benin City to improve command and control, decentralise operational decision-making, strengthen border security, protect critical national infrastructure and enhance counter-insurgency and internal security operations.

The restructuring will be implemented in two phases. The first phase, involving the establishment of the 5, 9 and 10 Divisions alongside the reorganisation of existing formations, is expected to be completed by September 2026.

The second phase, which includes the establishment of the 83 Division and further restructuring, is scheduled for completion by December 2026.

President Tinubu also commended the Chief of Army Staff, Lieutenant General Waidi Ibrahim Shuaibu, as well as officers and soldiers of the Nigerian Army for their dedication and service to the nation.

He reaffirmed his administration's commitment to ensuring that the Armed Forces remain adequately equipped, highly motivated and fully capable of safeguarding Nigeria's territorial integrity and protecting the lives and property of citizens.

Under the new arrangement, the Nigerian Army's 12 divisions will be headquartered in Kaduna, Ibadan, Jos, Makurdi, Port Harcourt, Maiduguri, Sokoto, Ilorin, Jalingo, Lagos, Enugu and Benin City, with each division responsible for designated states across the federation.
