FAYOSE'S PAST REJECTION OF APC ROLE RESURFACES AFTER TINUBU APPOINTS HIM REA BOARD CHAIRMAN


A previous statement by former Ekiti State Governor, Ayodele Fayose, declaring that he would rather remain at home than serve under the All Progressives Congress (APC)-led Federal Government has resurfaced following his recent appointment by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu.

Fayose, a prominent member of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), made the remarks on October 15, 2025, during an appearance on Politics Today, a Channels Television programme.

At the time, the former governor revealed that President Tinubu had offered him an appointment, but he declined the offer, insisting that he had no interest in returning to public office after serving two terms as governor of Ekiti State.

According to Fayose, he preferred to focus on personal pursuits rather than accept a position in the APC-led administration.

"Have you seen me taking an appointment from the APC? Asiwaju asked me, 'What would we give you?' I said, 'Nothing, sir.' At 65, I'd rather be at home, being more responsible and doing other things that I need to do. I've served well. Two-time governor, I've done well. Tomorrow will hold itself," he said.

Fayose also clarified that although he maintained a cordial personal relationship with President Tinubu, it did not amount to political alignment.

"I've not been with the APC, but I've been Asiwaju's friend and brother for a long time. That is the truth," he added.

He further stated that his comments on national issues were based on conviction rather than any expectation of political appointments or personal benefits.

However, despite his earlier position, President Tinubu on Monday appointed Fayose as Chairman of the Board of the Rural Electrification Agency (REA).

The appointment was announced in a statement issued by the President's Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga.

According to the Presidency, Fayose's appointment was among 26 appointments made to the boards of 10 federal government agencies and commissions, with all appointments taking immediate effect.

The development has attracted public attention due to the contrast between Fayose's previous public rejection of an appointment and his eventual acceptance of the board chairmanship.
