HOW SUNDAY IGBOHO CLAIMS HE ESCAPED DSS RAID ON HIS IBADAN HOME


Yoruba Nation activist, Sunday Adeyemo, popularly known as Sunday Igboho, has recounted his version of the events surrounding the July 2021 raid by operatives of the Department of State Services (DSS) on his residence in Ibadan, Oyo State.

Speaking during a visit by Muslim delegations to his Ibadan residence on Monday, Igboho claimed he remained inside the house throughout the operation despite the presence of security operatives, who he said were unable to locate him.

According to him, the operatives arrived at about 1:30 a.m. and began shooting after hearing his voice. He alleged that they later forced their way into the house by using explosives to destroy the burglary-proof entrance.

Igboho said he briefly considered surrendering but decided against it because he feared he could be killed if arrested.

He further claimed that his personal assistant, identified as Dudu, was held at gunpoint while officers demanded that he open the door. He also dismissed long-standing rumours that he transformed into a cat to evade arrest.

According to the activist, the operatives allegedly killed a cat after mistaking it for him and also brought in what he described as a "fake herbalist" to perform rituals in an attempt to locate him.

Igboho also alleged that a partially blind relative was shot during the operation after being mistaken for an attacker. He said the survival of the incident was due to divine intervention, attributing it to prayers previously offered by Muslim clerics over his safety.

The DSS has not publicly responded to these latest claims.

The July 1, 2021 operation followed months of heightened tension between Igboho and the administration of former President Muhammadu Buhari. Before the raid, the activist had drawn national attention after issuing ultimatums to some Fulani residents in parts of Oyo State, accusing criminal elements among them of involvement in kidnappings and violent crimes, while intensifying his campaign for the creation of a sovereign Yoruba Nation.

Following the operation, the DSS announced that it recovered firearms and ammunition from the residence, arrested 13 of Igboho's associates, and stated that two of his aides were killed during what it described as an exchange of gunfire.

After escaping Nigeria, Igboho was later arrested in Cotonou, Benin Republic, while attempting to travel to Germany. He was subsequently released by Beninese authorities after months of legal proceedings and has since remained in self-imposed exile in the Benin Republic, where he continues to advocate for the Yoruba Nation movement.
