ONDO GOVT ISSUES FINAL WARNING AS PROBE BEGINS OVER SULPHURIC ODOUR IN AKURE


The Ondo State Government has issued a final warning to individuals and organisations responsible for the illegal discharge of untreated effluent into a stream serving parts of Akure, following reports of a persistent sulphuric acid-like odour in some areas of the state capital.

In a public notice issued by the Ondo State Ministry of Environment, the government said it had received reports of an offensive sulphuric acid smell, particularly at night, across parts of Akure metropolis.

According to preliminary investigations by the ministry, the unpleasant odour is believed to be linked to the illegal discharge of untreated effluent and other hazardous waste into a stream flowing from Ijapo Estate through Edo Lodge and Fiwasaye to the area behind El-Shaddai Residential Estate in Alagbaka, Akure.

The ministry described the development as a serious environmental concern, warning that the illegal disposal of hazardous waste poses significant risks to public health, environmental sustainability, and the welfare of residents. It added that the act constitutes a violation of the environmental sanitation and pollution control laws of Ondo State.

The Commissioner for Environment, Dr. Tob Loko, has constituted a high-powered investigative team to determine the exact source of the pollution. The team has been directed to carry out a comprehensive investigation, gather credible evidence, and ensure that anyone found responsible is prosecuted in accordance with the law.

The state government reaffirmed its commitment to protecting the environment and ensuring the safety of residents, stressing that environmental pollution in any form will not be tolerated.

Residents have been urged to remain calm while investigations continue and to report any suspicious activities, illegal waste disposal, or other environmental violations to the Ondo State Ministry of Environment for prompt action.
