FG HALTS PROPOSED WAEC, NECO EXAMINATION FEE HIKE AFTER PUBLIC OUTCRY


The Federal Government has suspended the proposed increase in registration fees for the 2027 West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE) and the National Examinations Council (NECO) Senior School Certificate Examination, pending broader consultations with key stakeholders.

The decision was announced in a statement issued on Monday by the Federal Ministry of Education, which confirmed that the earlier letter approving the proposed fee adjustment, dated June 18, 2026, has been withdrawn to allow for a comprehensive review.

According to the statement signed by the Ministry's Director of Press and Public Relations, Boriowo Folasade, the suspension followed widespread concerns and feedback from members of the public.

The ministry explained that the proposed fee review was necessitated by rising operational costs associated with conducting national examinations, including logistics, security, printing of examination materials, technology deployment, quality assurance, and other essential services required to maintain the credibility of public examinations.

It added that the Minister of Education, Dr. Maruf Tunji Alausa, directed that the proposal be placed on hold in line with the Federal Government's commitment to transparent, inclusive, and evidence-based policymaking.

The ministry said consultations would now be held with examination bodies, state ministries of education, school proprietors, administrators, parents' associations, organised labour, education stakeholders, and other relevant partners before any final decision is reached.

As a result, the proposed increase in examination registration fees will not take effect until the consultation process is completed.

The Federal Ministry of Education reaffirmed that students' welfare, equitable access to quality education, and responsible policymaking remain central to the Federal Government's education agenda, assuring Nigerians that the public will be kept informed throughout the consultation process.

The suspended proposal had earlier approved an increase in the combined WAEC and NECO registration fee for secondary school candidates from ₦27,500 to ₦50,000 beginning in 2027, representing an 82 percent increase.

The proposed hike had attracted criticism from several stakeholders, including former Vice President Atiku Abubakar and the National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS), who urged the Federal Government to reconsider the decision.
