HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES DROPS OWN STATE POLICE BILL, SHIFTS FOCUS TO TINUBU'S CONSTITUTIONAL AMENDMENT


The House of Representatives has withdrawn its proposed constitutional amendment bill seeking the establishment of state police, opting instead to consider a similar proposal transmitted by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu.

The decision was announced during Tuesday's plenary, where lawmakers gave the Executive-sponsored State Police Bill its first and second readings before referring it to the House Committee on Constitutional Review for further legislative consideration.

The move effectively suspends the House's earlier constitutional amendment proposal as lawmakers align their legislative efforts with the Executive-backed bill.

The Committee on Constitutional Review is expected to conduct a detailed examination of the proposed legislation, reviewing its key provisions and making recommendations before the bill returns to the House for further debate and consideration.

The proposed state police framework has remained one of the major constitutional reform issues in Nigeria, with supporters arguing that decentralising policing could improve security and enhance the fight against crime across the country. However, concerns have also been raised by some stakeholders over possible abuse of state-controlled police structures.

The Executive-backed bill will now undergo the legislative process in the House of Representatives as lawmakers continue deliberations on the proposed constitutional amendment.
