IGP ORDERS POLICE TO SHOOT ILLEGAL GUN CARRIERS ON SIGHT


The Inspector-General of Police (IGP), Olatunji Disu, has directed police officers across Nigeria to take decisive action against individuals found carrying illegal firearms, as part of renewed efforts to tackle insecurity across the country.

The directive was issued on Friday during a stakeholders' meeting at the Benue State Government House in Makurdi.

According to the IGP, the order follows President Bola Tinubu's instruction that the lingering security challenges in Benue State must be brought under control. He stressed that only duly authorised security personnel are legally permitted to bear firearms, warning that unlawful possession of weapons would no longer be tolerated.

Disu explained that officers have been empowered under Force Order 237, which outlines the circumstances under which police personnel may lawfully use firearms. He said officers are not required to wait for approval from superior officers before responding to armed threats where the law permits.

"We are tired of losing our officers. Police personnel, soldiers and other security operatives should not continue to die unnecessarily. Our officers have been trained to respond appropriately to armed threats in line with Force Order 237," the IGP said.

He also appealed to residents to support security agencies by providing timely and credible intelligence, noting that public cooperation remains vital in combating armed criminality.

Benue State has experienced repeated attacks by armed groups in recent months, resulting in deaths, displacement of residents and destruction of property. The Federal Government has continued to deploy additional security personnel and implement measures aimed at restoring peace and improving security in the state.
