INEC SET TO INTRODUCE DOWNLOADABLE PVCS AND FULL ONLINE VOTER REGISTRATION



The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has announced plans to introduce downloadable Permanent Voter Cards (PVCs) and implement a fully online voter registration system as part of efforts to improve accessibility and strengthen Nigeria’s electoral process.


The development was disclosed on Wednesday by the Chairman of INEC, Professor Joash Amupitan, during a courtesy visit by the Director-General of the National Orientation Agency (NOA), Lanre Issa-Onilu, at the commission’s headquarters in Abuja.


According to the INEC chairman, the proposed initiative will allow eligible voters who have misplaced, damaged, or defaced their Permanent Voter Cards to conveniently download digital versions without going through lengthy replacement procedures.


The commission said the introduction of downloadable PVCs forms part of a broader plan to modernize the electoral system and leverage technology to make voter participation easier and more efficient for Nigerians.


INEC also revealed plans to fully digitize voter registration, enabling eligible citizens to complete the registration process online, reducing physical bottlenecks often experienced during registration exercises.


Election stakeholders say the move could significantly improve voter access, simplify the replacement process for lost PVCs, and encourage wider participation in future elections across the country.


During the visit, discussions reportedly focused on strengthening collaboration between INEC and the National Orientation Agency in promoting voter education, civic responsibility, and public awareness ahead of future electoral activities.


Analysts believe the planned reforms represent another major step toward improving transparency, efficiency, and technology-driven electoral management within Nigeria’s democratic system.


The commission is expected to provide further details regarding the rollout process, implementation framework, and operational guidelines for the new digital voter services in the coming months.
