NUT SUSPENDS INDEFINITE STRIKE IN OYO STATE AFTER NATIONAL INTERVENTION


The Nigeria Union of Teachers (NUT) has officially suspended the indefinite strike action earlier declared in Oyo State, following the intervention and approval of the union’s national leadership.

According to reliable sources, the decision to suspend the industrial action was reached after consultations involving key stakeholders and the national body of the union, bringing temporary relief to thousands of affected students, teachers, and parents across the state.

The strike, which commenced on June 1, 2026, was initiated by the Oyo State chapter of the union in response to growing concerns over the security of teachers and schoolchildren, particularly following reports of the abduction of some teachers and pupils.

In a move to draw national attention to the situation, members of the union also staged nationwide solidarity rallies on June 2, 2026, demanding urgent government action to address safety concerns within the education sector and improve the protection of teachers carrying out their duties.

The industrial action had disrupted academic activities in several public schools across Oyo State, raising concerns among parents and education stakeholders over the impact on the school calendar and students’ learning progress.
